Heaven is for Real

This is a quick read that will make you laugh, cry, and (hopefully) reflect a little bit on your faith, the fundamental premises of Christianity, and the role of parents as stewards of Heavenly Father's children.

I appreciated that the author didn't try to embellish his sons responses or make them into doctrinal sermons, but tried instead to share the circumstances that initiated the comment and then shared his reaction to them, giving us glimpses into how HE grew in his understanding of the gospel and changed because of the things his son was sharing. I also liked that he showed how their realization that their son had seen heaven grew over time, that it was a journey, not an epiphany.

Being a new dad, I think there are some great parenting skills exemplified in this book:

-taking time to discuss your children and their behavior regularly with your spouse
-asking open ended questions
-treating children's experiences and feelings as real as adults'
-finding ways to spend time with your kids even when you are busy
-sharing your faith with your children
-being open to learning things FROM your children
-praying for and with your child
